UNTL-AAS Article Writing Workshop for International Journals in Humanities and Social Sciences

Date:               25-27 February 2025
Venue:            Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL)

About the workshop

Thanks to David Webster, UNTL’s Advance Learning Center, Mica Barreto Soares, and Human Right Center for organizing this three days Workshop on writing scholarly articles for international academic journals.

The Workshop itinerary followed a dual-track structure: Cohort 1 was for attendees with drafts finished or near completion; and Cohort 2 which was for participants at an early stage of their writing career.

Some of the themes & objectives of the sessions –

  • Demystifying the academic publishing process: how to submit and stages of publication process
  • What is publishable What is not?
  • Workshopping your idea or article using the TOMAS method (Topic, Organization, Methodology, Argument, Significance) for each contributor
  • Components of an article (Belcher method) – literature review, significance, argument, macrostructure, introduction, microstructure; natural and some social sciences usually have methods, results and discussion. No one size fits all!
  • Making a writing commitment
  • AI and Academic Writing and Plagiarism
  • Different types of academic writing (journal article, book chapter, report etc).
  • Sharpening an argument: The hero narrative method; the questioning method
  • Reading to write
  • Examine, discuss and potentially propose revisions of macrostructure and microstructure of completed or partially completed draft articles
  • Strategize for publication outlets
  • Designing the writing plan
  • Advancing the argument
  • Planning for a publication outlet

The third day of the Workshop was set aside for authors to work one-one-one with instructors and for peer-support in small groups. Participant feedback was excellent and everyone leaned a great deal, particularly through the feedback, discussions, and information sharing.
