Report – workshop summary
The “Empowering Emerging Scholars: Resource Decentralization, Social Inclusion, Environmental Justice, and Climate Change in Transitional Myanmar” workshop was held from February 21–25, 2025, at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University. It brought together nineteen emerging scholars from Myanmar to explore key concepts such as resource decentralization, environmental justice, climate change, resilience, and social inclusion as analytical lenses for understanding pressing issues in Myanmar.
In Myanmar’s contested areas, ongoing conflicts and displacement have severely impacted research capacity and education. Despite these challenges, strengthening research is vital for resilience, inclusivity, and sustainable development. This workshop aimed to bridge knowledge gaps, foster collaboration, and support knowledge co-creation.
The participants represented diverse ethnic backgrounds and came from various regions inside Myanmar, along the Thailand-Myanmar border, and in Thailand. They work across educational and research institutions, NGOs, and as independent researchers and graduate students.
This five-day interactive workshop featured lectures from international, Thai, and Myanmar scholars, panel discussions, a field trip, and daily briefings and reflections. Given the participants’ strong research backgrounds, the workshop also served as a platform to exchange experiences and identify gaps in Myanmar’s research landscape.
