The University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City (the USSH, VNUHCM) boasts its more-than-60-year history of establishment and development. The USSH’s predecessor was the College of Letters, officially established in 1957 as part of the University of Saigon. On October 27, 1976, the College of Letters would operate as one of the two component members of the University of Ho Chi Minh City, covering social sciences and humanities. On March 30, 1996, the University of Ho Chi Minh City was separated into two distinct institutions, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the University of Science. Since then, both of the universities have had independent status and have been members of VNUHCM.

Current status

The USSH provides educational programmes at different levels, ranging from bachelor’s to master’s and doctor’s, alongside short-term training courses. With its research orientation, the University focuses on building up basic sciences in the field of social sciences and humanities in line with the long-lasting tradition of the University, and at the same time, developing a number of applied disciplines in the same field in response to the actual context and needs of the current labour market. The training scale is taken into account to ensure reasonableness, i.e. stabilising the size of full-time and second degree programmes, gradually reducing the size of in-service training programmes while expanding the size of high-quality training programmes.

International programmes

In 2021, the University has more than 16,000 students enrolled in 93 programmes of 34 undergraduate disciplines, 44 graduate programmes, and 15 international affiliated programmes. All the programmes offer students access to a diverse selection of disciplines, aiming to enhance students’ capabilities so that they will be able to embrace the challenge of the country’s modernisation and industrialisation and translate what they learn into professional achievements.

The USSH has built up and fostered research and academic partnerships with more than 250 universities and research institutes around the world in various forms of cooperation. The University is one of the leading institutions in term of student activities, not only in Ho Chi Minh City but also in the whole country. With many particular disciplines in culture and languages of many nations, the University has created a multicultural academic environment that attracts both domestic and international students.
